Medium Dispersion
By selecting the volume of the injected sample, the volume of the flow channeland the flow rates of streams at the confluence points, dispersion can be adjusted to a medium value. Systems with medium dispersion are suitable for automation of all reagent-based assays.

If sensitivity of the assay should be maximized,

  • the flow rate should be reduced (pFI)
  • sample volume should be increased so that the dispersion coefficient is adjusted to D 2-4.
  • reagents should be added through a confluence points.
  • concentration of reagents should be increased.
  • the temperature of the system should be elevated.
  • a long path flow cell should be used.

NOTE: Sensitivity and detection limits of reagent-based assays can be further enhanced by Bead Injection Analysis, as described in Chapter 3.
